NEW DAKAR THOUGHTS

NEW DAKAR THOUGHTS

I’m not sure I’m an enthusiast of this contemporary Dakar.

I mean, I always mean to do it, but I miss that idea of improvisation, the space for invention and perhaps the naive purity of the origins.
Yes, I understand, old people’s talk. It’s true, just as it’s true that anyone of my generation has developed a passion for that myth in the epic of the 80s.
Then what you just can’t stand is the rhetoric of hardship and especially heroism. I think that those who run the Dakar do it for fun, even if it’s a very hard and tiring fun. Heroes are others, hero is someone who raises a family in the midst of difficulty, hero is someone who survives in Gaza, someone who pays the mortgage, someone who behaves well no matter what the cost.

And what about Saudi? The race runs despite a context of human rights violation.

I’ll be back on this later on.
